ABOUT

Serap Kocacenk

A space you recognize, before you understand why.

Serap Kocacenk is a Swedish–Turkish contemporary artist working between Malmö and Istanbul.

Her paintings are held in private and institutional collections across Europe, the United States, and Australia.

She works within emotional abstraction, a practice rooted in the space between what can be articulated and what can only be felt.

Her paintings do not describe emotions.

They hold them.

Through layered surfaces, movement, colour and controlled intensity, Kocacenk creates works with a psychological presence of their own. They are immediate without being obvious, intimate without being quiet.

The work meets you before you have words for it.

Working between cultures has shaped Kocacenk’s perception. Not as a narrative to illustrate, but as a sensitivity to contradiction, nuance and the simultaneous existence of different realities.

That sensitivity is part of the work.

Her process is responsive and deeply attentive. A painting develops through accumulation, interruption, decision and instinct. She allows the work to lead when it needs to, while remaining present enough to recognize when a decision has to be made.

There is no fixed formula for when a painting is finished.

It is finished when it arrives.

Each work is created as something to live with.

Not decoration.

Not an answer.

A presence that can continue to reveal itself over time.

Kocacenk’s paintings have also entered healthcare and institutional environments, where they become part of spaces shaped by vulnerability, recovery, reflection and human connection.

In 2024, A Cry for Help was selected for the cover of Dag Ekner’s book Kampen för livet.

Her practice continues to expand through exhibitions, commissions and an international collector base.

A limited number of works are released.

Some remain private.

Some are still becoming.

And some simply wait for the person who recognizes them.

The work does not need to explain itself.

Neither do you.
